Our Staff

Sandra Cherry, PT

Founder and Co-owner of Universal Physical Therapy, Sandra is thrilled to be practicing in her hometown.  Being in Newport allows her to be close to her family and to remain active in this communinty.  She is a 1990 Magna Cum Laude graduate of the University of Connecticut with her BS/PT degree, where she received the McMillian Scholarship.  The managing partner, chief physical therapist and Clinical coordinator roles keep her busy, but treating her patients remains her passion.  She brings years of experience combined with all of the newest training to her patients, including her continued training with the Professional Baseball Atheltic Trainer Society.

Matthew Gordon, PTA, SCW, Personal Trainer

After graduating with honors, Matt began his work as a PTA in Massachusetts.  He know lives in Newbury, NH and is enjoying the wonderful outdoors here in New Hampshire.  Matt enjoys working with patients of all ages, along with his work as a personal trainer.  His passion for healthy and fitness stems from his yeas playing college football and competing in martial arts; including being the 2018 NAGA East Coast Gold Medal Champion in Jiu Jitsu.

Amanda Couitt, DPT

Per diem staff PT / Director of Clinical Education at RVCC

After growing up in nearby Croydon and then exploring the country, Amanda came home to join our family in 2009.  After receiving her BA in Biology (with a minor in Psychology) from Mount Holyoke College, she was awarded her Doctorate in Physical therapy in 2006 from Arcadia University.  She traveled the country, working in various settings from PA to HI.  Amanda is a certified Ergonomic Assessment Specialist and a "Healthy To The Bone" osteoporosis instructor, as well as the Director of Clinical Education for the PTA program at River Valley Community College.  She is very active with her two busy sons.

Myrtle Nesin McCullagh, DPT

After receiving her Doctorate in P.T. from Husson University, Myrtle moved to New Hampshire.  She is excited to be living in a small town, similar to her childhood home in Maine.  She is a certified High School Wrestling Official, a mother, a wife and a P.T., Myrtle brings her high standards of care and her passion for helping patients reach their optimal potential to our practice.  

Brandi Hurd, ISSA, Certified Fitness Trainer

Since joining us in 1997, Brandi's hats have been many, including certified personal trainer, front officer manager and administrative assistant.  Brandi attened UNH and NH Community College after graduating from Newport High School.  Her group classes are the favorite part of her day here, as they always liven up the clinic.  She is a very invovled with area sports teams, from coaching to volunterring.  Brandi keeps us running smoothly!

Lori Flewelling, Receptionist and PT Aide

A native Newporter, Lori loves Newport.  She has made a wonderful life here, marrying her high school sweetheart, raising her three children, restoring her farmhouse, and now watching her grandchildren grow.  She brings her years of nursing experience, her love for traveling, music and family along with her smile and energy to UPT.
